When it comes to choosing an early learning center, you want to be confident that you make the right decision for your little one, but how do you make the best choice? When you have so many different options, it can be challenging and overwhelming to decide what will be a perfect fit. Selecting the right center for your child will help him or her grow and develop the critical skills needed to excel throughout the rest of their lives. It is very important to choose the childcare center that aligns with your values and philosophies about learning. At Kaleidoscope Kids Childcare, our goal is to nurture your child of any age and help him or her develop a long lasting love of learning.
To find a center that fills all of your family’s needs and to help evaluate if the school’s philosophies are in tune with your own, we at have compiled a checklist of what every parent should look for when choosing a care provider for your child.
This is our Ultimate Guide to Choosing a Childcare Center!
1. Look for a nurturing, child-centered learning environment.
Look for a center where your child will feel encouraged and safe to explore his or her potential in a stimulating and supportive environment. Look for care providers who nurture and encourage the utmost respect for the child, his or her peers, the community of the school, and the world around us, where the rights and needs of the child are met and upheld. At Kaleidoscope Kids we practice an observation based teaching style which allows our caregivers and teachers to observe your children’s natural curiosities and create their lesson plans around them. This gives your child the freedom to learn at their own pace based on their own interests and skills.
2. Ask about the staff-to-child ratio.
This is a very important quality indicator of a care center, and denotes the number of staff to the number of children. The fewer children educated by each staff member is fundamental to higher quality care. A low ratio will ensure that your child is getting the attention and the support he or she needs in order to be safe and successful. At Kaleidoscope Kids we have one of the lowest staff-to-child ratios. This is important to us because having a low ratio helps our caregivers and teachers develop a strong, meaningful bonds with your children, which results in more engaged, peaceful, happy, and relaxed children.
3. Make sure the curriculum and philosophies align with your family values.
As you search for the perfect center for your children, it is important to choose a location whose values are similar to your own values as a parent. Look for a center that fits with your ideals of child development, aligns with your methods and beliefs on child development and fits with your families philosophies on education. It is also important to look for a center that fully prepares your child to enter kindergarten with well rounded knowledge, respect for others, and a love of learning. Kaleidoscope Kids programs are project-based, hands-on activities promote creativity and development of self-expression. Activities are age appropriate and reflect the physical, emotional and social well-being of the individual child.
4. Ask about the training of the caregivers.
Be sure to look into how the childcare center adheres to trainings, certifications and other licenses for early childhood education. Our curriculum follows NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) standards, we are fully licensed by the State of Connecticut and we have a consistent A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.
Our instructors also attend at least 20 hours per year of continuing education classes, including specialized courses in infant growth and development as well as safety classes such as first aid, CPR, and hygiene and food handling.
5. Make sure the environment and culture of the center align with your outlook.
Each childcare center is different when it comes to the environment and culture they create. Be sure to evaluate the cleanliness of the center and the upkeep of the grounds, as well as the general culture and outlook of the staff. At Kaleidoscope Kids, we pride ourselves in keeping our center well maintained and orderly. We also are extremely proud to be one of the few childcare centers with a huge grassy playscape in CT, as well as a flat rubber playscape and a large sandbox.
More importantly, we highly value maintaining a positive and loving environment in which all people are included, valued and cherished. Our director, Andrea, plays a huge role in making sure her team of teachers and staff are supported with coaching and resources for their continued education. This in turn gives them the confidence and care to create the best environment for the children. It is also important to make sure the center has a low staff and child turnover rate. A high turnover rate could signal serious issues with the culture of the center, and decrease the comfort and sense of security of your child, if changes are frequent.
6. Look for a safe and secure setting.
It can be a nerve wracking process, when you decide to leave your child at a daycare center, safety and security may be one of the most important factors to consider. Make sure to look for a center that makes your child’s safety and security a hallmark of their center. At Kaleidoscope Kids, we have an advanced door code system, child-proofing, and internal cameras that enable the director to monitor and assist teachers. It is also important to make sure that all health and safety licensing requirements are strictly enforced. Ask about the procedures that are put in place to prevent accidents and manage emergencies and that the staff is trained to stay calm and handle situations in ways that reduce fear and disruption.
We also are very proud to offer, “Watch Me Grow,” which allows parents to check in on their children on a secure website. Not only does this give parents peace of mind, but also helps them be involved in the development of their children by giving them a birds eye view of their daily activities.
7. Look for a center whose hours and programs offer flexibility.
As busy parents, it is crucial to locate a center that has flexible hours and a multiple packages that cater to your schedule and simplify your life. Kaleidoscope Kids understands the commuter schedule and the importance of having support on busy days, holidays and even late meetings.
